The picturesque island of Herdla has an exciting history and unique scenery. Throughout time it was a renowned place, due to the island´s fertile soils and strategic position.

Herdla was a royal farm since the Viking Age. Still today the moraine landscape, sustain Hordaland´s largest farm.

During World War II the island was occupied by German troops and numerous installations remain. The island has a bird sanctuary with more than 240 bird species registered.

Herdla is a small island (1,6 km2) easy to traverse and explore in one day. It is situated at the northern tip of the Askøy archipelago. The ride northwards from Bergen takes ca. 40 minutes. Bus 499 from Bergen bus station.
